Week 20: Shapes for no shape

I have been suffering how I could represent the depressed emotion as my design. Fashion is an expression as shape. We cannot show our themes like films or music which can tell their stories easier than fashion because they are 'time-art'. Of course, we can do it as a part of show. But that is a final seasoning and should not be for main purpose, I think.

So, to be honest, the excises were little bit pointless for MY theme, unfortunately. Because  my research images were not useful for finding silhouette ideas. So naturally, the outcomes became pointless designs. Those were not shapes which I wanted to describe.
There are some collages but they are seemed to be unsuccessful (of course not all).

Then I did some draping. This time, I focused on layering and draping rugs that inspiration come from homeless.  These outcome were not sure on a mannequin but after I changed their size and played with Photoshop, they became usable.

[Concept board, fabric and colour]
I hope this is going to be my final concept board because I spent too much time for it and I know it should not take long time in real life.

From my concept board, colour choices were selected naturally. One mistake was, when I was sorting research images were much more grey but the actual printed out sheet became more sepia colour. And fabric selections are still poor. I need to look for more, especially for heavyweight fabric.

I also tried manipulating fabric a bit because I thought that way will be good for showing my concept. Layering different weight fabrics, making holes to see through under-layers, knitting embellishing and burnt edge. I am going to continue this kind of research in my spare time.

And finally, these are some my initial design developments. Layering, hollow, heavy and light, drape and bold straight line, lightness and darkness, these kind of key words are 24/7 rounding in my head.  Not all of them are good, but I need to keep drawing and drawing until I can find bests.
